Midtown - Small Town Friendly Vibes On Every Street
Neighborhood Vibes and Local Flavors
Midtown Billings has that small-town feel, packed with friendly neighbors leisurely sipping coffee or enjoying a quick bite to eat at some of the best local spots in town. The close-knit feel is the perfect mix of downtown culture and quaint residential living.
Coffee
Nothings brings the neighbors together like a great cup of coffee, and midtown is well-known for its impressive espresso pulls and trendy blends. Visit Black Dog Coffee House for a relaxing and inspiring experience. Situated inside Roots Garden Center, you’ll savor their rich, smooth coffee as you take in the sights and smells of the greenhouse. Make sure to check out the gallery featuring all kinds of work by local artists. With a nostalgic mid-century atmosphere, Poly’s Place Coffee promises a friendly and fun time in this old gas station turned hangout spot. BW Blacksmith Coffee & Grill Co is a family-owned business named after their beloved Grandpa Ben. They pride themselves on the strong flavor and aroma of local batch roasts, and their delicious wraps and burgers. You can also swing by the drive-thru of local favorite Mazevo Coffee for a signature blended frappe or a hand-crafted soda.
Places to Eat
Some of the tastiest and most authentic food that Billings has to offer is found right in Midtown, with local spots that have perfected their craft and are happy to share it with the neighbors. For a light lunch, try Carmel Cookie Waffle, with “30 plus years of cozy” they serve traditional hand-pressed Stroopwaffle cookies with an authentic recipe straight from The Netherlands, as well as scratch made soups, flaky Dutch Sausage Rolls, and many other delights. Also check out The Ohana Poke Company for a fresh, healthy and creative poke sushi bowl made from wild-caught salmon and tuna.
There are several unique dining options for an evening gathering that will satisfy any craving. Phatty’s Seafood & Steakhouse showcases their Cajun culture with family-owned recipes like the authentic Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Kitchen Sink Jambalaya and Shrimp and Grits. And y’all - they serve Cajun brunch on Saturdays! If you’re in the mood for a truly inspired farm-to-table culinary experience, then The Granary is your destination. Housed in an historic and beautifully restored grain mill used back in the day to serve students attending Rocky Mountain College, it now offers fresh pasta and seafood, hand-crafted cocktails and a gorgeous patio. Other great favorites are Madhouse Gastropub for fun pub fare, brews and live music, Santiago’s Mexican for fast yet authentic Mexican dishes in a family friendly environment, or try UMI Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar and celebrate a special occasion with a hibachi dining experience.
Things to Do
If you’re looking to go against the grain and do something out of the ordinary, then Midtown has what you’re looking for. Travel through a deep-sea cavern and enter a pirate’s lair while you play 18 holes of blacklight mini-golf at Let’s Glow Putt. Relieve some stress and tension by trying your hand at throwing an axe or knife at the surprisingly fun Ox Indoor Axe Throwing. Looking for adventure, but not sure about throwing sharp objects? Check out The Grand Escape Room, a real-life mystery adventure for you and your friends to solve in under 60 minutes. Don’t worry, there are clues to help you along the way. For over 60 years, neighbors have gathered at Billings Studio Theater, a community-based theater that performs dramas, musicals and comedies throughout the year. And in mid-June, bring your blanket or lawn chair and relax in Pioneer Park for a full evening of events with Symphony in the Park. With food trucks, a kids instrument petting zoo and conducting contest, and a full Billings Symphony Orchestra performance, it’s an evening to remember.
Places to Shop
Gainan’s Flowers has been a staple in the community since 1951. With gorgeous flowers, plants and gift items they are a one-stop shop for any occasion or celebration. If you’re loving the neighborly vibe, be sure to pop by the Poly Food Basket, a corner store gracing midtown for over 60 years. They arguably have the best specialty meat department in town, along with a great wine selection and any last-minute items you may have forgotten at the big box store.
Adventure for Outsiders
If there’s one thing the locals know how to do well, it’s to live boldly outside, whatever the season. The locally owned shops in midtown supply everything needed for your next hike, ride, glide or climb. Visit the Base camp for the perfect outdoor gear to suit your activity. They rent winter and summer outdoor equipment from cross-country skis and snowshoes to paddleboards, camping and backpacking equipment. Ready to purchase your own equipment? They’ve got you covered there too. Ready to ride? Guaranteed you’ll find all things bikes at The Bike Shop with outfits for any level, or stop by The Spoke Shop for a bike fitting or rentals. Wanting to hit the slopes? The Ski Station has the best snowboards, skis, rentals and equipment, and with over 38 years of experience, they will get you the right set-up and size for the right price. And they have bikes too! There’s no excuse for not getting outside and letting yourself go.
