From kayaking and festivals during the summer months to snowshoeing and symphonies in the winter, Billings is an amazing year-round destination for an authentic Montana experience.
BIG SKY SUMMERS
Summer season brings the clearest skies of the year and the warmest temperatures, making it a perfect time for outdoor enthusiasts to visit. Water temperatures, especially those bodies fed by the Rocky Mountains, can be cooler, so packing a wet suit or something similar isn’t a bad idea if you plan on rafting, kayaking or participating in any other water sports.
The nights can be considerably cooler in the summer months, so if you plan to explore Downtown Billings after sunset (which we highly recommend), long pants and long sleeves or a light jacket will ensure you’re most comfortable.
In some instances, the region can receive heavy rains in the summer months, meaning there is the potential for road closures and other travel advisories. It’s best to check the local forecast, as well as our Planning Ahead page, before and during your visit to plan accordingly.
FALL IN LOVE
WITH BILLINGS
Temperatures remain relatively warm in the fall months, averaging around 75F during the days and 50F in the evening. So our advice would be to pack for summer with the chance of wintery temperatures showing up too soon.
Fall is still a perfect time for hiking and biking, as well as having fun on the water. In fact, fall can be a better season for kayaking and rafting as river water levels tend to be a little bit lower and more manageable.
Evenings can get a little chilly, so if you’re planning on a night hiking the Billings Brew Trail or browsing neighborhood shops, it’s best to bring light jacket and long pants just in case.
HIBERNATE?
TRY HIBERNOPE
TRY HIBERNOPE
Winter is the perfect time to visit if you like cool temperatures and deep, fluffy snow. Our hiking trails transform into a playground for cross-country skiers, snowboarders and still the occasional hiker, while indoor adventure in Billings really heats up.
This is Montana and winter is cold. So be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes that you can wear in layers – especially if you plan to explore outside. And although all that snow is fun to play in, it often can result in unexpected road closures, so be sure to play it safe as you venture out. And if you decide to stay indoors, well there’s still plenty of fun to be had right next to the warm fireplace.
SPRING INTO
OUTDOORS
In the spring in Billings, winter slowly gives way to milder temperatures and the opportunity to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and more. Temperatures average around 60F during the day and 40F in the evenings, so it’s best to pack enough clothes to ensure you’ll be comfortable in any conditions.
If you’re a kayaker, rafter or fisherman, note that meltoff from the Rocky Mountains can cause rivers to run higher and faster than normal. Be sure to plan ahead and proceed with safety top of mind.
Although spring is generally warmer, it’s still possible for Billings and the surrounding regions to receive snow as late as Memorial Day, so be sure to check out the local forecast before you visit to avoid any chilling surprises.
