Outsiders: It’s Time to Do Our Thing in Billings, Montana’s Trailhead
The fall weather is here, and that always puts a bright smile on the faces of outsiders like us. Because it’s time to embrace that pure, unencumbered Montana adventure we’ve been craving.
More than 47 miles of hiking and biking trails in and around Billings are a great place to start. The trail system atop the Rimrocks – ancient sandstone bluffs surrounding downtown Billings and offering postcard views of the distant Montana terrain – connects Swords Rimrocks Park and Zimmerman Park and is one of the local favorites for a leisurely hike or ride. If you’re interested in exploring even further, check out our complete trail map.
The fall months also bring some of the finest fly fishing in the country to the surface. Spend an afternoon in peaceful solitude casting your line into the Stillwater River or Bighorn River. These waterways – along with the Yellowstone River – are also great for rafting and kayaking for a memorable adventure. Read more about all the ways you can explore authentic Montana on the water.
Billings is also the center stage for a variety of festive seasonal events, like Holiday Nights at ZooMontana and First Fridays – a celebration of local art, food, crafts and local businesses. And be sure to take in a show at the historic Alberta Bair Theatre, which hosts a wide array of entertainment, from the Billings Symphony Orchestra to live stand-up comedy shows. If you really want to explore the city like a local outsider, check out out complete list of events and entertainment.
And of course no matter the time of year, your visit to Billings isn’t complete without a few stops along the Billings Brew Trail, boasting nine breweries, three distilleries, a cider mill and a winery. While you’re out there, fuel up at some of our favorite restaurants, including James Beard Award nominees Walkers Grill and Marble Table.
