Saturday, January 18th, we are letting the fear seep into the very foundation of the historic Babcock Theatre, for it is once again time for another film in our ongoing Late Night series! For this month's film, we will be playing a special screening of John Carpenter's legendary 1982 arctic creature film, THE THING! More than 40 years later and THE THING still remains one of the ultimate examples of effective horror, excellently executed in a way that lets true paranoia and fear set into the hearts and minds of its characters and viewers before exposing them to some of the most shocking and impressive practical effects ever put to film! Based on the 1938 short story, "Who Goes There?," THE THING sees a twelve-man research team in Antarctica discover an alien creature buried in the snow and ice for the last 100,000 years. Bringing the ice-encased creature back to the station for further research, the creature is accidentally thawed out, leading the men to learn far too late that this alien has the ability to replicate the cellular structure of whatever it comes in contact with, successfully hiding itself among the others. Armed with nothing but time, flamethrowers, and the paranoiac fear for their lives, the research team restlessly attempts to stop THE THING before it picks off every last one of them!
